Artist statement
My work explores competition, endurance, and sport through physically demanding video performance and playfully constructed sculpture. I blur the lines between athlete/coach/artist, studio/gym, and exhibition/arena creating a space for viewers take on the role of spectators, fans, or athletes. The works take on multiple forms such as practice, recovery, and game day. Practices are exhaustive performances consisting of repetitive actions or movement. Recoveries are long performances with little movement, but slowly show a change in material or the artist/athlete’s’ body. Game days are sculptural works that use similar material or equipment from performance works and transform them in to manipulated, sluggish, or repeated forms.
