Artist statement
Jie Shuai is a computational artist, interactive artist, and designer based in London. She holds an MA in Computational Arts from Goldsmiths, University of London (2024–2025) and a BA (Hons) in Graphic Design from Wenzhou-Kean University, China (2018–2022). Her practice spans installation, interactive art, and video, combining old and found objects with 3D digital art to draw audiences into playful, hands-on encounters with the work. Her current practice centres on the relationship between objects, memory, and trauma. She is interested in how personal narratives are absorbed and transformed by collective memory — how a private experience, once shared, is reshaped and reinterpreted as it moves through different contexts and audiences. Interactivity is the key mechanism in this inquiry: it allows a viewer to move continually between the roles of observer and participant, so that the work is never finished by the artist alone but completed anew, and differently, by each person who encounters it. Her interactive works stage this idea directly. In In Infinity, an immersive galaxy installation co-created with artist Xin Yan, visitors are placed inside a cosmos built from computational imagery — an individual act of looking is transformed into a shared, embodied experience. The piece was shown at the City of Codes & Light Festival in Milton Keynes (October 2025). Poetry River, a two-site interactive installation, works through language instead: visitors submit individual...
