Artist statement

Zhao Jing is a visual artist and photographer based in Texas, USA. Her practice is rooted in photography and shaped by an interest in how existence is experienced, preserved, and transformed through time. She is interested in how people, memories, and moments leave traces that remain after they have passed. Born and raised in China, Zhao studied literature and then spent a decade as a photojournalist and photo editor, covering major news events from the front lines and receiving international awards. She later earned an MFA in photography in the United States and taught the history of photography at university level. Her most recent project, Cathay, began in 2011 and was completed in 2025. The project comprises nineteen photographic diptychs responding to Ezra Pound’s translations of nineteen classical Chinese poems. Through photography, it revisits the poems from the perspective of a Chinese artist a century after Pound’s Cathay. Another of her long-term project, the Fallen explores how humans make a place for death in the world. Comprising seventy photographs made between 2012 and 2025, the series concludes with a short text in the form of a dialogue between the artist and her five-year-old daughter. Her work is held in private and institutional collections in the United States, Europe, and China.
