Jorge Morocho
Lives and works in Paris, France
Artist statement
Jorge Morocho’s practice is rooted in painting and video and has recently expanded to include writing and CGI-based animations. His work is focused on the circulation of images and the ways they participate in the construction of identity. Through long-term processes, he collects and reworks commercial and domestic images in which forms of control, aspiration, and fantasy are encoded. His practice engages with the mobilization of commodities and narratives from a perspective attentive to the asymmetries of power that structure global visual economies. Rather than offering illustrative critique, his work operates through subtle displacements, repetition, and irony. Morocho’s line of research has gradually led him toward questions of family heritage and migration, through images and narratives connected to his place of origin and its mythologies.
