Jude Barton Artist Statement The Architecture of Absence: Reflections on the Foundational Zero My current artistic practice is a deliberate movement toward absolute reduction, exploring a personal reset to a foundational zero. Heavily influenced by the post-war German avant-garde ZERO movement of the 1950s, this work represents a philosophical search for a blank slate—a quiet, unburdened space focused purely on minimal essential lines and gestures. The selected works presented here are a definitive chosen pathway into this current pursuit of austerity--a progressive shedding of the non-essential. Trajectories—circles, squares, and sweeping angles—across dark, atmospheric grounds lead the viewer across a landscape of possibilities only limited by their own meditation and search for meaning. I often work on nontraditional substrates to create a statement of organic entropy or to provide texture or faint ghost patterns under the surface lines and shapes. Rather than aiming for flat perfection, I look for harmony in the contrast between rigid discipline and organic surface textures. This body of emerging work demonstrates an ongoing evolutionary process: an analytical journey of stripping away noise to find resonance in what remains.
