Artist statement
My paintings discuss the relentless presence of media imagery in our lives and the pernicious narrative that imagery promotes, a malignant narrative clothed in a seductive visual form. By visually quoting sections of photographs found in advertising - and focusing on the carefully staged details of these images - the paintings serve as a way for me to own the media images which simultaneously fascinate and vex me. Over the last two years I've begun a body of work that incorporates current media figures - fictional and real - interacting in both violent and comical ways. These paintings allow me to discuss my own personal sense of rage and fear at my current situation as a woman and artist - indeed, as a human being - living in the United States in 2019.
