Artist statement
JULIE ENGLAND ARTIST STATEMENT These paintings explore memory and landscape with complex spatial environments that hover between realism and abstract passages. The Earth’s diverse surface is fascinating. The environments I paint invite viewers to visit this place. Local light and atmosphere affect the colors we see, mood and energy. My connection to outdoor energy is comforting like connecting with family. I was raised on a rural Wisconsin pine tree farm where trees beckoned as imaginary childhood friends. We relocated seven times before I was thirteen years old from Wisconsin to Florida and Texas. These diverse landscapes, skyscapes and waterfronts piqued my interest. My focus is on process and materials, an extension of my chemical engineering background. I enjoy mark-making and material transparency densities to create organic images. My work includes topological forms and gestures caressing the Earth’s undulations and vegetation. I use color as a vehicle to convey energy from nature.
