Artist statement

Julie Light's creative practice focuses on exploring body and form, human or otherwise, often dealing with visualising health and disease or examining hybridity. She is fascinated by how people imagine their bodies internally, leading her to present the body in unconventional ways, such as from the inside out. She also investigates where human and creature health might overlap or become entwined. Her hypothesis is that alternative ways of understanding physical being can influence our day-to-day sense of embodiment and identity. A central part of her practice is to collaborate with others, and she has created artwork with organisations across the UK such as The Royal Society, University of Leeds, the National Oceanography Centre and AstraZeneca. She also works with individuals with stories to tell. Her science inspired projects have dealt with cutting edge research as diverse as foetal biomechanics, future cancer treatments and deep ocean invertebrates. Personal stories have inspired work on cancer, memory, and insomnia. Julie works in glass, combined with metal and other materials, primarily making sculptural objects. She focuses on the physical as well as the communicative qualities of the materials and aims to make pieces that people want to touch as well as to look at and think about.
