Artist statement

Lainey Marra, one half of the design duo ISAACLAINEY, based in Brooklyn, NY, celebrates the patina of urban chaos in the creation of furniture and lighting fixtures out of forgotten found objects. Through her collaborative practice with artist Isaac Haseltine, the embedded emotional histories of materials such as broken chairs, scrap wood, and antique textiles are expanded by their careful disassembly into playfully scrambled combinations. In the illusive space between the industrial and the handmade, a new domestic texture is created. Marra and Haseltine’s use of traditional handcraft techniques and raw carpentry interventions are inspired by the adaptation and innovation that most often rests outside systems of corporate industry. Their janky domestic objects are layered anthropological displays of New York City’s public and domestic life and speak to the subjective value of communally authored pieces.
