Artist statement
My recent work explores how stationery wood forms can feel as though they are alive and growing. I am interested in the science and biomechanics of plant growth, such as the forces that cause stems, leaves, and flowers to take their shape. I am also interested in invention and fantasy as it can allow a form to appear plant-like and mysterious without a clear source of inspiration or resemblance. Technically, I use bent lamination and coopering to construct these forms. Curved elements are laminated and then assembled using mechanical fasteners and adhesives. Bent lamination creates smooth, continuous curves, while coopering transforms these curves into volumetric bodies with defined edges and flat facets. Together, these techniques create cylindrical forms that are simultaneously rigid yet fluid.
