Lee Noble

Lives and works in Minneapolis, MN

Artist statement

Lee Noble (b. 1983, Nashville, TN) is a multi-disciplinary artist and musician based in Minneapolis. Noble received an MFA from Minneapolis College of Art and Design (2020). Drawing on influences that include film history, punk culture, camp, and science fiction, his recent tongue-in-cheek paintings explore images of American fear. His recent work is ridden with copies, sequels, and duplicates. Noble engages in a kind of benign thievery, using a scavenger’s eye to unearth and reanimate lost missives and buried meanings in a recombinant approach to art-making. Images are cropped and enlarged, scissored from magazines, digitized and then painted by hand, sculpted and slip cast again and again, and juxtaposed without comment in varying states of readability. Noble attended the Mountain School of Arts Los Angeles in 2017, and was a guest composer at EMS Stockholm in 2019. He has performed at venues and festivals that include Hopscotch Fest in Raleigh, ReWire Festival in The Hague, Issue Project Room in Brooklyn, Sonihouse in Japan, and the Walker ArtCenter in Minneapolis. His visual work has been exhibited in Los Angeles, Austin, Minneapolis, New York, Manchester, and Berkeley, and in publications by Picturebox Inc., Thames & Hudson, Spector Books, Cold Cube, and Secret Headquarters. He is the co-founder of Night Club gallery in St. Paul, along with Emma Beatrez.
