Artist statement
My work converges around the construction of layered vibrational objects to test visual observation. The clamor for endless discernment invites a contrast of more subtle and implied encounters. Attention, endurance, opacity, natural phenomena, bewilderment, and the unreliability of perception surrounds my undertaking. I laminate thin plywood panels to build dimensional orbs or boxes, and then combine with layers of lacquer, resin, color correction film, paint, plexiglass, glitter, and sometimes LEDs. Centered around geometry of the physical body, the combination of process and material in the hyperspace series creates a visual effect in person that pulses and throbs. The BLSH series takes the form of the light boxes but instead uses only reflected color and depth. Other ongoing series use the visual structure of SX70 Polaroids as a jumping off point. Squares bounded by rectangles juxtapose optical lines, shapes, patterns and symbols; an imagined architecture for confusion, ephemerality, desire.
