Artist statement
My name is Lilah Rose, and I was born and raised in a small Michigan town, in a family that was always designing and sewing clothes. Growing up there was a constant discussion of where clothes came from, who was responsible for the costumes in our favorite movies, or how one should choose materials for a room. While initially I was galvanized by the sense of skill and purpose that work with fabric entails, gradually I began to wonder how this could work for or against someone who hoped to wield it as an artist. Personally I’ve experimented with embracing the “craft” designation of fabric art, in exploiting the perceived femininity of the medium to depict more traditionally masculine subjects like cars. More recently however I’ve been drawn to abstract forms and compositions, curious to see if I can render something so formless and fluid that it will confront the viewer first; and before the inevitable consideration of how (and with what), it was constructed.
