Litsa Sursock

Lives and works in New York, NY

Artist statement

Lítsa (Evangelía) Sursock is the founder of Studio Evangelía, a painting practice based in New York. Her work explores multicultural identity and belonging through a surrealist lens, painting figures with distorted, layered identities set in minimalist landscapes that give no clue about where someone is. She grew up between three continents, in Hong Kong, Athens, and New York City, and was never anchored to one culture. She came to painting full-time in 2025, and Nowhere & Everything is the body of work she has been building since: paintings about people who belong to more than one culture and don't fully fit into any single one. Before painting, she studied photography at Pratt Institute and worked as a freelance photographer, then spent about a decade directing creative work in luxury fashion, with clients including LAPOINTE and Alexis Bittar and freelance work for Montblanc, Universal Music Group, and 300 Entertainment. That experience gave her a disciplined sense of color, composition, and how to build a coherent visual world across a body of work, skills she now uses toward more personal work. Painting has become the most direct way she has found to represent what cultural fluidity feels like.
