Artist statement

Lizzy Chemel is a multi-disciplinary artist, specializing in ceramic. She was born in China under the One Child Policy and adopted and raised in Southern California. Her work addresses the concepts of heritage and unknown origin, specifically, the intersection between an undocumented ancestry and the culture she grew into. Each work re-creates her personal history using what Saidiya Hartman calls, “critical fabulation," generated from ancient Chinese artifacts, translations and folklore, and the imagery of her childhood and adolescence growing up in Los Angeles.
