Lives and works in Piermont, NH

Artist statement

For years I have been interested in the poetry of matter dedicating my formal explorations as an artist to the material cause. In addition to painting, the work has included drawings and objects. Although referenced through the forms of the human body my interest is less in the human form than in the matter it adorns and the possibility afforded by this intentional ambivalence for the creation of surprising and unknown subjectivities. In the creation of objects, I have sought to work with materials that skirt the boundaries of traditional usage, thieving whenever possible from other fields in search of materials that could, through non-traditional use, continue to self relate and so never, by means of either formal manipulation or objective play, depart from their inceptive ground. For the most part, materials employed are natural - wax, wool, paper pulp, animal hair, latex, plant fiber, plaster, cloth and clay. These ‘matters’ have been combined to evoke objects resulting in a body of work that, as a whole, can be seen as a kind of ‘natural history’ of matter, a way of presenting in subjective display specimens of its ‘pre-formal’ imagination.
