Artist statement
Props All but the first slide here are pictures of objects which I was attracted to in their role as props in all manner of overlapping dramedies; from the personal, uncanny, and comic to the economic and socio-political. These approximations of commercial studio photographs reimagine the blithe, tantalizing hucksterism of product photography as a to take on the deflationary spirit of our time. My work is often caught up in an affective exploration of the language of American style consumer capitalism and the political and emotional rot that has attended it. As a child I had my thumb amputated in an accident at Disney World which is a story that echoes throughout my practice, not only as personal anecdote but as a traumatic slippage between the real and the fantastically produced. This story takes on secondary dimension because my big toe was subsequently amputated and sutured onto my hand in place of the thumb. The sculptural work is from an ongoing series of Film Objects; kinetic sculpture that slowly turn enacting an animation more Frankenstein than Mickey Mouse.
