Artist statement
Inspired by personal and cultural tensions between spirituality and technology, my work aims to explore the anxious fascination in fantasies of the future, and nostalgia for the mythologized past. With humble materials such as plaster, cardboard, and hand-dyed paper, formed through meticulous handicraft, I construct imaginative tool-like sculptures whose formal evocations shift between the sacred and the utilitarian, the ancient and the futuristic, the fantastical and the everyday. Though tightly controlled, my work is ultimately expressionistic in nature: I aim to poeticize the collective ennui of our contemporary culture, whose wounds won't be healed by the next new gadget, however much we may wish.
