Madeleine Sauvé

Lives and works in Vancouver, BC, Canada

Artist statement

Madeleine Sauvé (b.1972) is a Canadian visual artist creating felted tableaux, sculptures and fantastical drawings after cinematic stills and graphic media references. Working with narrative and emotional states via the photographic frame; a positioning of self soothing and personal processing are the origins of her practice. In her 2025 series called Window of Tolerence, images of women, domestic spaces and subtitle texts are needled into the woollen fibres. A sense of play reassures in some scenes while a confrontation asserts the figure’s presence in others. The fibres are at once comforting and intriguing. References to photography and cinema come from her studies in printmaking followed by 10 years of teaching photo-printmaking in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Sauvé now works in the commercial film industry as a Set Decorator/Production Designer where the story telling of objects and spaces further informs her work. Her work is collected domestically and has been exhibited in the US, Italy and Japan. Artist residencies in Canada and Italy have been highlights in her development.
