Artist statement
As a narrative artist, I am interested in the stories behind the subjects of my paintings. I create hybrid fantasy characters by deconstructing figures and integrating them with non-human objects, both industrial and organic. These magical beings embody personal experiences that in the creative process become more universal, and often political. I utilize both traditional oil and digital painting techniques. The first rough oil “sketch” captures the spirit of the piece; then begins a process of working back and forth between computer and easel, digging into layers until the image is complete. The final piece is printed and mounted on board, then re-worked in oil a final time.
