Lives and works in Chicago, IL, USA
Artist statement
Mariel Harari is an interdisciplinary artist. She creates hybrid forms that consider instability, embodiment and agency, interspersing her body and memories with references to building construction and the environment. Harari uses slow, delicate processes including representational drawing, hand painting fabric, cooking then sewing with Alganyl biotextile, and video documenting her walks. She often assembles and suspends work by thin strands of hand crocheted wire or sewing thread, and obscures intimate imagery through fragmentation and layering. Harari is a recipient of the Chicago DCASE Individual Artists Program grant. She has attended residencies at Chicago Artists Coalition (CAC), Annas Projects, High Concept Labs, Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts and Vermont Studio Center. Her work has been featured in publications including Brooklyn Magazine, Sixty Inches From Center and Surface Design Association. Recent exhibitions include solo shows at Co-Prosperity, Northeastern Illinois University and Ignition Project Space as well as group shows at Hangaram Art Museum in Seoul, CAC, MDW Art Fair, and Comfort Station. Harari was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY and currently lives and works in Chicago, IL.
