Artist statement

I've been painting for about four and a half years and I am a self taught artist. Oh, I've taken some workshops and private classes but I've learned much of what I know from just doing art while studying many of the greats throughout the history of art. My art teacher taught me the "rules" of art. As she would say, 'you have to know the rules of art so that you can properly break those rules.' I'm not sure if that is an actual saying in the art world or if she made it up for my benefit but I'm going to run with it and create based on that philosophy. Always pushing myself and pushing the rules to see what I can get away with. Always creating and watching some beautiful and interesting and sometimes shocking paintings emerge at the same time. I am a member of my local art league and have served on the board of that art league for about three years now. This has given me a great group of artist friends who are always ready to give a critique and opinion of my next step on whatever piece I might be working on at the time. They are always uplifting and give good advice the majority of the time. It's a great group of people who have become friends and mentors. This art league affiliation has given me the use of the league's studio to create in and will continue to be a great place to work in even after I am able to have my own studio space, whenever that might be. I also help to teach art to teens and preteens as part of the mandate of the art league to teach youth art....
