Artist statement

I paint change and the evidence of change. Alternating and overlapping painted and drawn marks, I use the simplest geologic principles – younger-over-older and younger-cuts-older – to build a stratigraphic record, creating drawings and paintings that reveal how they changed through time. Text-based works experiment with spatial vs. temporal organization, including spatially jumbled letters or phrases that are legible in time (oldest-to-youngest), based on overlapping and crosscutting relationships that provide visible proof of the order in which every letter was created. Explicitly or implicitly, all of my work asks and suggests answers to the question “How was this made?”
