Maureen St. Vincent

Lives and works in Oakland, CA

Artist statement

Through a surrealist vocabulary, St. Vincent explores ancient archetypes of nonconforming women. Disembodied, monstrous forms disrupt the paper, invoking the "corruptible" nature of these figures to inhabit a realm simultaneously sensual and grotesque. This disruption bleeds into her wooden frames: the movement within each pastel drawing acts as an insidious force, twisting the rigid wood into organic, human contours until the boundary between object and frame disappears. Maureen St. Vincent (b. 1984 San Luis Obispo, CA) currently lives and works in Oakland, CA. She received her BA from San Francisco State University and graduated from Hunter College’s MFA program with an emphasis in painting. St. Vincent’s work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at Nicodim, Los Angeles (2024); Hesse Flatow, New York City (2022); Moskowitz Bayse, Los Angeles (2022); Zoe Fisher Projects, New York City (2021). She has also been included in group exhibitions at The Drawing Center, New York City (2025); Nicodim Gallery, Los Angeles (2022); Adams and Ollman, Portland, Oregon (2020); San Luis Obispo Museum of Art (2019); Regina Rex, New York City (2017). Her work has been featured in multiple publications including Hyperallergic, Brooklyn Rail, ArtMaze Magazine, Artnet News, and Art of Choice.
