Artist statement
Maya Gulin is a visual artist working in experimental film, video, installation, and painting. She holds a BFA from Emily Carr University of Art and Design in film, video, and integrated media (Vancouver, BC). She explores processes of memory, time, intuition, and decision making through the concepts of editing aesthetics as they pertain to conscious and subconscious choices versed by experience. She applies this to abstract painting, creative writing, and filmmaking- where narrative invents itself through associations evoked by familiarity and association, directed through a sense of feeling. By embracing themes that evolve through the process of allowing details to form unplanned finalities, she relies on information extended via intuition and circumstance to fill in the blanks that arrive her works into conclusion. The nature of her work considers ways of suggesting participation with the viewer through playful use of materials, allowing the viewer to implement their own personal histories into the nuances of her work. Her focus on the technicalities of darkness and lightness highlight commonalities and contrasts in the human experience, and question the innate desire to find and create meaning through what we witness, comprehend, and sense. She recently obtained a psychology major from Concordia University in Montreal.
