Artist statement
My practice primarily uses animation, video and CGI focusing on storytelling, narrative structures and documentary filmmaking. I explore allegorical tales and myth-making and more recently, glean stories from objects and personal rituals using an archive of ephemera, gestures and sounds. Recent explorations of materials and processes centre on using animation to configure black corporeality as moving image sequences. These are based on the relationship between the fruits of labour and leisurely pursuits such as walking, crafting and computational procedures. I look the movement of bodies as seen from shared geographies, histories and experiences in an attempt to communicate where the shape and spaces converge. I examine what that form is; how it is constructed by spaces, and reimagine what the interstices develop into. I’m interested in how I can recalibrate animation; how to find a way to explore what my relationship to the landscape has been and what it currently is or could be. I interrogate what an embodied placement of virtual and physical materials can be produced from bringing together the past, its absences and its effects.
