Artist statement
I cannot escape my inherently anthropocentric perspective (i.e. my human relation to time + space, my human relation to things and objects of both material and immaterial value). But, could I complicate it in such a way that momentarily de-centers (me), if only subtly/slightly. Through sculptural forms, photographic information, and multi-disciplinary installation methods I attempt to feel time differently; to think time more geologically yet aware of the non-anthropocene post-truth backdrop we selfie-exist in front of. In the work I continue to question how I might zoom so far out, yet simultaneously look so closely, that the experience of time becomes ruffled, if not utterly confused. The contemporary moment is filled with algorithms and systems that continually prioritize my preferences in order to accrue monetary benefit for someone else. When online I see things that cushion my experience so that I might spend more time and buy more things, so that my head bows and thumb lengthens. Then I throw it away because the things are cheap and obsolete. Through the collection of found and sculpted objects and studio processes of crystallization and aestheticization, I create theoretical caves in formation. Imagine a lot of rocks, rocks that grow and form in relation to one another yet do so on a time scale so vast I could never fully witness it, like stalagmites and stalactites. But also “rocks” that we build, shape, and create to live just as long as any other mineral I come...
