Mia Weiner

Lives and works in Los Angeles, CA, USA

Artist statement

Mia Weiner hand weaves tapestries based on photographs she takes, mediating and remediating the digital image through cloth. As she maps out the image, each pixel becomes a crossing of tensioned threads and figure emerges as the body of the cloth. Glitches and stripes of color become moments of intimacy and a place for her queerness to seep into the work. Shifting gaze, power dynamics, and narrative, Weiner beckons the viewer into a realm where mythology intertwines with contemporary discourse on gender and femininity, and invites us to question and reimagine the world in which we live. Mia received her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2020) and her BFA in Fiber from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2013. She was awarded the V&A Parasol Prize by the Victoria & Albert Museum and Parasol Foundation in 2024. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including in New York, London, Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago, and Rome. Weiner is a Yaddo Fellow and her work is in the permanent collection of the Kunstmuseum Den Haag, Netherlands.
