Artist statement

Colonialism is part of Filipino history. A significant result of this is assimilation and the loss of pride in one’s culture - whether involuntary or voluntary. Leaving the Philippines at a young age and then living in Germany, Israel and the US, I became a master assimilator. As an adult, I quickly realized it is necessary to strive for integration of our authentic selves rather than assimilation. My pieces encourage conversation about interconnectedness and celebrates what makes our culture rich and vibrant. The medium I've chosen is inspired by conversations with my mother about her fond childhood memories of Abaca fibers shining like gold while drying in the hot sun in her hometown. She told me that the iconic Manila Envelope was originally made from Abaca which is also known as Manila Hemp.
