Artist statement

Figurative Art Exploring Temporal Dimensions The focus of the paintings by Michael Price is the chromatic nude and figure within a timeless universe in order to transcend the restrictions of realism. Price’s figurative work has increasingly explored mythological and psychological archetypes, reflecting the countless facets of the human condition. This direction began to deepen in his thirties and forties as he immersed himself in the writings of C. G. Jung and Paul Tillich. Jung’s works — especially “The Structure and Dynamics of the Psyche”, “Civilization in Transition”, and “Psychology and Alchemy” — revealed to him both the vastness of the human psyche and the boundless scope of our imagination. An example of this is the artist’s recent exploration of Mayan iconography juxtaposed with ancient Greek figures with similar deities manifested in the collective unconscious. Therefore narrative in Price’s work has more to do with poetic associations rather than just telling a story. Works in Series & Ongoing Projects Rather than producing isolated paintings, Price often develops a series that unfold as cohesive presentations: * *Evolution of a Myth — ten paintings spanning from “The Birth of Adam” to “Apocalypse, God on Her Bicycle’. * *Resurrection Adventures — a ten-painting...
