Artist statement
Circles and curves are central to my work, reflecting my belief that growth is continuous, worthwhile journeys are rarely straight, and we always have a chance for renewal. The continuous shape of circles reminds me that we are never finished. In this life, we have endless opportunities to begin or try again and grow. I also believe that growth continues beyond this lifetime. We begin again in new forms, with new opportunities to learn and develop. I sometimes use concentric circles to represent the different roles we play throughout our lives. Each role becomes part of who we are, but none tells the whole story. At the center is our essential self, the part of us that remains whole as our roles change. I also simply love the beauty of the circle. It has no sharp edges and no clear beginning or end. It can suggest something sweet like candy, something playful like a marble, or something joyful like a bubble. But even on its own, the circle feels smooth, continuous, and full of possibility. Curves remind me that a worthwhile journey is rarely a straight line. There are unexpected turns, changes in direction, and moments when we have no idea where we will end up. That uncertainty is part of the learning and also part of the fun. Creating curves gives me a similar sense of freedom. I can follow the movement of the line without needing to control exactly where it goes. There is something wonderful about their smoothness and the way they move naturally across the canvas....
