Lives and works in London, UK
Artist statement
Milo Kester is a London based artist who graduated from Goldsmiths University in 2018 with a first class honours degree in Fine Art. His practice is mainly based around sculpture and drawing. Milo was born in London in 1995 and shortly after moved to Los Angeles, where he lived until he was 10, moving back to the UK, to Stroud, Gloucestershire in 2006. Milo's work has always dealt with themes of masculinity and loss; having lost his dad at 15 and being the oldest man in the family by 20. The sculptures in his current body of work consist of carved wood, which is burned and polished to create depth and lustre, and they sit on steel feet that have been heat patinated to blue. Through his practice Milo explores ideas of non-human agency and intelligence, looking at the communities of plants and fungi that make up forests; the microorganisms that live on and within us; and stromatolites, the fossilised structures of the ancient cities created by photosynthesising microbes. Some of his major aesthetic aesthetic influences include works by comic book and concept artists such as Phillip Druillet, Moebius, Syd Mead and H.R. Giger; architecture and monuments from communist era Yugoslavia and the architectural concepts of Lebbeus Woods; and sculptors such as Thaddeus Mosley, Huma Bhabha, Lynn Chadwick and Germaine Richier.
