Artist statement
I is a transnational artist contemplating the naturalness of embodied memory. I is Korean, currently living and working around the United States. I seeks for interpersonal connection between her history and present, and how that connection has been weaved and recorded among the others. Abstract space between individual memories(and knowledge) and social memories(and knowledge). Clay is a physical medium that historically transforms into permanent and exchangeable value. I communicates it with auditorial and inter-media in order to create the space of physical encountering. Encountering the reality of this medium, I embodies emotional exchange and physical communication through domesticity of labor and unspoken voices that shaped her history. I spends time digging into family history, tracking the genealogy of memory via archives, texts, photos, images, and conversations, arranging each piece in this composition in a way that evokes the personal and vulnerable.
