Artist statement

Mirjam Bakal (1995) is a German, Berlin-based artist who has lived and worked in Berlin for the past 13 years. Working across performance, sound, film, and multimedia installation, her practice explores the body as a space of perception, memory, and transformation. Drawing from her background in classical music and performance, she works with voice, movement, sound, and image to create poetic and fragile spaces between presence and absence, visibility and disappearance, and silence and sound. Her experience of motherhood has further shaped her understanding of time, embodiment, vulnerability, and creative flow. Influenced by kintsugi, Wabi-Sabi, and embodied memory, Bakal approaches imperfection and fracture not as states to overcome, but as conditions through which new forms and meanings can emerge. Her work invites a quiet engagement with transformation, impermanence, and the traces bodies leave behind.
