MIYUKI Akiyama
Lives and works in New York, NY
Artist statement
Statement of Work Miyuki Akiyama explores the shifts in meaning that occur as everyday objects and images move between places and contexts. Working with oil, watercolor, cloth, paper, and found materials, she transforms motifs associated with domestic life and decoration—such as fruits, animals, floral patterns, lace, and textiles—through acts of layering, cutting, sewing, and painting. Cloth and found materials are separated from their original functions and places, forming new relationships within the paintings. Intimate and circulating objects, personal memories and shared cultural images, body and landscape intersect across the picture plane. Akiyama considers what remains and what changes as objects and images move from hand to hand and place to place. She understands painting not as a fixed site for memory or culture, but as a circuit through which they circulate, intersect, and continually transform.
