Artist statement
I am a performance-sculpture artist, and a recent Fine Art graduate of Newcastle University. My work's centre is instinctual, and potent with personal truth. Through my fears of an unknown future for humanity and the earth itself, I find myself turning to my instincts. I manipulate textile material relentlessly, until it takes on an organic autonomy, stretching from its threaded confines, defying the properties of its former self, and surpassing is 'material' label. This process is long, painstaking and arduous. Every stitch is soaked with uncertainty. As the piece grows, and I continue to follow an instinctual path, I begin to see my body in relation to the work. I feel a deep need to physically embody my work and become engulfed by it. Large expanses of ambiguous skin peer from a landscape of synthetic seatbelts and enigmatic lumps of bony skin protrude from volcanic scarred wool felt. This is an activated extension of my body that speaks to the uncertainty of what it is to be landscape and what it is to be human.
