Artist statement
Mustafa Ali Clayton is a multidisciplinary artist focusing on ceramics, specifically hand built sculptures and portraiture. His work draws connections between the aesthetics of antiquity and contemporary methods and influences and incorporates figurative, functional, and decorative executions. The details or lack thereof suggest voids and depths and questions about ourselves and perceptions of others. Clayton works primarily in ceramics because of its significance as the foundation of modern day technology. The purity and strength of the finished material relates directly to the messaging in each piece which represents a voice and vision that is poignant, poetic, and powerful.
