Lives and works in Yokosuka, Kanagawa, Japan

Artist statement

Bio I work from home as a "Kanji Artist" under the artist name NIKOICHI_TSUKI, aiming to contribute to society and achieve independence through my work. Living with an intractable muscle disease and physical limitations, I have forged a new path through art. Since 2019, I have been creating works that combine photographs of everyday scenes—particularly my home garden—with my own calligraphy, drawings, and poetry. My work is also a kind of diary, a way of leaving behind my thoughts and proof that I lived. In 2026, I was also diagnosed with breast cancer, but I continue my creative practice with a positive outlook while facing this illness. Artistic Style Inspired by kao, the traditional signature of the Heian period that combined multiple characters into a single symbol, I reinterpret this cultural heritage in the form of digital calligraphy. I create original, highly designed forms that reflect my thoughts and the scenery of each moment. My backgrounds are mainly based on photographs. When a photograph is not possible, I either add elements through digital painting from hand-drawn sketches, or use AI to generate a base image and then develop it through digital painting. By combining digital techniques with landscape photographs and calligraphy, I explore a new form of Japanese art.
