Naomi Lisiki

Lives and works in New York, NY

Artist statement

Naomi Lisiki (b.1997, Guadeloupe) is a visual artist living and working in Brooklyn. Originally born and raised in the French West Indies, she grew up surrounded by the vibrant sea. Working within abstraction, she channels her emotions to explore ideas around womanhood, spirituality and philosophy. In this way, she is able to express her “internal landscapes”, charting a personal mythology that reclaims and reimagines her life as a woman from the Caribbean diaspora. Her paintings, washed in colored hues that echo cyanotypes and alternative printing processes, bloom with delicate forms, suggesting shapes of nature engulfed in light. Each painting is a trace, each color a residue of a lived experience, visual memories that invite the viewer to wander through a landscape of emotion. Having heritage from Morocco and Congo, she carries within herself a consciousness shaped by the movement and cultural multiplicity that is integral to these places. When she paints, she reflects on the shifting landscapes of Morocco, Congo, and Guadeloupe. From the sun-warmed soil to the expanding seas and skies, every painting stroke lingers a celebration of colors and freedom. Painting is to her a site of discovery and metamorphosis, a space where perception, memory and gesture converge to form meaning.
