Artist statement
Color, illusion, friendly gestural lines and playful textures form my world of art making. The harshness of our culture has its absurd side, which I like to bring to the visual surface as a counterpoint to the way we’re asked to exist in the world. While things are bad, things are also good. What I depict as contenbt is a response to the world around me. As a maker I respond to materiality. I like the weight and presence of the real thing. You can lean on it. You can count on it. The frames I use – windows and screens – are devices for formal play and become the edges for aesthetic choices. I’m inviting the viewer into a conceptual reckoning with a perceptual question. I’m hoping to ignite energy and joy in my viewer by reframing everyday objects to show their humor, delight, and beauty. To enjoy an inspired moment, we don’t even have to move. We can just change our point of view.
