Artist statement
I stitch with a single thread of DMC cotton, without a single knot, on fine transparent fabric. The image is identical on both sides, so a work has no back, only two faces. I found this technique myself, long before the internet, and every design is entirely my own. The thread changes colour with the angle of view, so the work looks different as the viewer moves, and this shifting is intentional. Each piece takes up to three months and several kilometres of thread. The language of my work is faceted, cubist and futurist: a face, a hand or a body broken into fragments and then gathered back together. Embroidery is my form of meditation, a way of gathering fragments of a life with thread. I work with legends, portraits, cats, moons and quiet humour, looking for the point where memory, myth and everyday life meet. My works are held in the collections of Karl von Habsburg and Kenzo Takada, and in private collections around the world. I live and work in Kolomyia, Ukraine, and have exhibited in solo shows since 2010.
