Artist statement
Olivia Drusin is a New York-based painter whose works critically engage with the psychological dimensions of public and private spaces through a perceptual lens. Her work meticulously dissects the banalities of everyday life, exposing the latent disquietude that permeates seemingly mundane encounters. Drusin's paintings traverse the intersection of the ordinary and the uncanny, manifesting as stark, reductive representations of thresholds and obscured moments that challenge conventional interpretations of visual perception. In her practice, Drusin employs a process of deliberate image flattening, which disrupts the legibility of reference photographs and transforms them into complex vehicles for exploring consciousness. This technique fosters a dialogue between the painted surface and the viewer's perceptual experience, inviting a deeper contemplation of the intersections between sight, space, and psychological engagement. Drusin holds a BFA from The Cooper Union School of Art and an MFA from Columbia University. Her work has been exhibited internationally including Pablo’s Birthday and Nathalie Karg Gallery in New York, International Objects in Brooklyn, Galleri Golsa in Oslo, Selenas Mountain in Queens, Abattoir Gallery in Cleveland, SARDINE in Brooklyn, and Kustera Projects in Brooklyn, among others. She lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
