Artist statement
Oxana Kovalchuk Artist Statement Personal transformation in relation to external circumstances is a key theme in my artistic practice. My work explores how global changes - migration, political, and social upheavals - impact personal identity, prompting adaptation, reevaluation of life, and the creation of new modes of existence. Emotions, memories, and the perception of personal history evolve through these events, shaping a renewed sense of self. In my mixed media works, glass collages, and installations, I use layering to reflect the non-linearity of human experience. Textures, colors, and images act as fragments of memory, influencing the formation of contemporary identity. In some pieces, I incorporate additional elements such as threads, plant fragments, and old family photographs, which serve as personal symbols and physical connections between the past and present. These elements transform the works into visual diaries, preserving significant moments and establishing a tangible connection across time. My background in psychology is deeply intertwined with my creative process, where I draw on knowledge of emotional processes, memory, and personal transformation. This exploration highlights the complexity of human nature and its capacity for change under the influence of global events.
