Artist statement
My work is an active attempt to unlearn the gendered behaviors and thoughts inherited from my upbringing. It is informed by my experiences as a middle child of two blue collar workers. Special attention is given to how obedience is rewarded through the surveillance of various labors, including the emotional. My longing for female agency and autonomy is unveiled through the use of language and material poetics. These sensualities are informed by various feminisms, found objects, craft, sculpture, sound and video performance. I subvert the cinematic male gaze to offer voyeuristic views of failed relationships: romantic, platonic, familial, and institutional. The work offers critical discourse of our reliance on social contracts such as the gender binary and heterosexuality; offering (dis)comfort from the (un)familiar.
