Artist statement

Rad Hourani is an interdisciplinary artist whose inventive practice examines identity politics and the social structures through which identities are defined, labeled, and experienced. Working across sculpture, painting, architecture, photography, textile, performance, text, printmaking, and 3D, Rad develops projects that critically question inherited systems of representation and classification. As a disabled and neurodivergent artist, Rad investigates socially imposed norms and constructs that confine human identity, including geopolitical, sexual, economic, and ableist structures. Rad’s oeuvre explores plurality, inclusion, accessibility, the body, language, nonconformity, and expression, challenging fixed categories and hierarchies while creating spaces for divergence. Since 2005, Rad’s evolving approach has included the invention of gender-neutral patterns and an alphabet, connecting artistic inquiry with social transformation. The self-taught artist’s work has been presented internationally through exhibitions, publications, lectures, educational projects, and cultural institutions including Centre Pompidou, Tate Modern, Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Rad’s work is held in private collections and museums worldwide.
