Artist statement
My fascination with painting is relentless. I am continually amazed by the unlimited richness of the ways of seeing: painting’s ability to speed up or slow down time, the staggeringly wide perspectives as well as minute attention to a tiny speck of dust. My own artistic practice presented here is born of restraint, of a state of lack rather than excess. It may be a reaction to this excess and overgrowth, which sooner or later has to manifest some form of conceptual or methodological decline. Therefore it is better for my practice as a painter to be poor, because I am not interested in painting as an object, which to me is important only insofar as it is an ‘opportunity’, as Immanuel Kant would describe it, to see with more attention, or to be more silently quiet. To my mind, painting is an exceptionally sensitive and precise measuring tool, which, through it long, conceptual evolution has developed a most surprising relation to reality: observed, veridical, invented.
