Artist statement
I find my most recent work investigating ways in which narratives, both oblique and direct, are derived from patterns observed in nature and how these influence our interaction with the natural world. Recent theories and projections of how our planet has changed or will change have identified some inherently crucial patterns, natural behaviors and symbioses that, upon their revelation, illustrate an ever more complex and urgent framework of interdependency. Through installations and large-scale drawings, I combine elements of broad space, unexpected scale and object histories to explore themes surrounding collective memory, the dynamics of inquiry and our changing relationships with and as animals. By inviting careful consideration of one’s physical and historical place in relation to natural bodies, data, environment and narrative I attempt to disrupt traditional, patriarchal notions of control, curiosity and observation between the nature that functions outside of, and in conjunction with, our natural selves.
