Artist statement
The human figure is a central tenet within my wider art practice. In previous work I've examined concepts of identity, persona, and the body through sculpture, video, and installations, while also adding a critical narrative, considering women’s roles in society and history. My current work, an ongoing project titled "Amorphous", consist of abstract forms in which I focus on representing macro proportions of the the body and the psyche. By using intuitive processes of free association, I create images that oscillate between representation and abstraction and imagine corporeal landscapes of the internal. My images often evoke visceral and abstracted biomorphic forms that emphasize the relationship between psyche and corporeal. My recent paintings and silkscreens are created using tinted inks that are applied in layers creating atmospheric color transitions. My interest is to imagine the body as if viewed through a micro lens of anatomical proportions, thus my images vary between representational and abstract In my work, imaginatory representations of internal spaces including the mind are presented, providing a visual representation of what cannot be scientifically identified or measured. My 'Amorphous' series explores the dichotomy between the 'unknown' and the scientifically measurable aspects of the body and the unconscious.
