Artist statement
I paint from interior and exterior spaces. My work is based in a critical investigation of the history and possibilities of abstract representational painting. Prioritizing the potential of color and of transitional light, I probe the relationship between color and time, exploring the use of color as if it were a machine. I consider the personal as political, the internal as expansive in its examination of the implications of representation and shifting realities. Rather than taking the position that “art is a field of progress,” my work seeks to declare the potential for art to be seen as an activity in building a shared world. The Anonymous Citizen paintings investigate the potential to unlearn imperialism. They challenge the idea of naming, and aim to represent moments of intersectional identity. Escaping the confines of one reality and entering an alternate reality is often where I find meaning within the complexity of the mind and the emotions it houses.
