Riichiro Yamamoto
Lives and works in London, UK
Artist statement
Riichiro Yamamoto is a Japanese artist based in London. His practice is rooted in the experience of the Great East Japan Earthquake and explores how physical matter, landscapes, and technologies record and carry memory across time. He approaches objects, bodies, built environments, and landscapes as recording vessels that can outlive individual human lives, accumulating traces of people, events, and cultural practices. Across his practice, memory is understood as something carried through materials and repeated human actions. Working across moving image, installation, sound, digital reconstruction, and participatory practice, his work moves between analogue and digital, tangible and intangible forms. Technologies are used as ways of translating and questioning relationships with matter. His recent research focuses on memories embedded in landscape and embodied cultural practices, exploring how emerging technologies and cultural traditions can mediate our relationship with the environment across geological timescales.
